Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and the unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind. These passions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither, in a wayward course, over a deep ocean of anguish, reaching to the very verge of dispair.

 

I have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy － ecstasy so great that I would often have sacrificed all the rest of my life for a few hours for this joy. I have sought it, next, because it releaves[relieves] loneliness － that terrible loneliness in which one shivering conciousness[consciousness] looks over the rim [of] the world into the cold unfathomable lifeless abyss. I have sought it, finally, because in the union of love I have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined. This is what I sought, [and] though it might seem too good for human life, this is what - at last - I have found.

 

With equal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished to understand the hearts of men. I have wished to know why stars shine. And I have tried to apprehend the Pythagorean power by which number holds sway above the flux. A little of this, but not much, I have achieved.

 

Love and knowledge, so far as they were possible, led upward toward the heavens. But always pitty[pity] brought me back to earth. Echoes of cries of pain reverberate in my heart. Children in famine, victims tortured by oppressors, helpless old people ahated[a hated] burden to their sons, and the whole world of loneliness, poverty, and pain make a mockery of what human life should be. I long to alleviate the evil, but I cannot, and I too suffer.

 

This has been my life. I have found it worth living, and would gladly live it again if the chance were offered me.

突发奇想，决定从今天开始，不定期的把我从新东方的那本《生而为赢》里背诵的文章在这上面默写并修改，目的有三个：

1. 检验背诵的熟练程度，加深背诵的印象；

2. 把好文章和大伙儿分享，因为那上面的很多文章确实很好；

3. 练习英文打字和单词拼写。

我不知道自己能坚持多久，所以写在这上面，请大伙儿督促提醒，看看自己最终能把这30篇给搞定多少篇。另外由于这是跟英文学习有关，我会在我的Drosophila Melanogaster上也同步贴出，不方便上spaces的可以上那里去看。[]中是替换或者添加的内容，另外标点的修改就不标出了。说干就干，我按照自己背诵的顺序而不是原书的顺序。今天是第一篇。

 

 

Four score[Fourscore] and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth upon this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

 

Now, we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battlefeild of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field as a final resting-place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

 

But, in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, [Who struggled here,] have consecrated it far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us, the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us － that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause [for] which they gave the last full measure of devotion; that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain; that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom; and that government of the people, by the people, and for the people, shall not perish from the earth.
